A Legacy Built Over Time
The origins of the Acosta firms trace back to the mid-1930s, when Benjamin Acosta Sr. entered the insurance field at a time when loss investigation was defined not by volume, but by judgment. His professional formation was technical in nature. He pursued studies in Civil Engineering and liberal arts in the continental United States and later served as a civil engineer for the United States government. That early exposure to structure, analysis, and accountability shaped the manner in which he would approach insurance work for the rest of his career.
In 1937, Benjamin Acosta Sr. assumed responsibility for the Puerto Rico branch office of Dargan & Co., Inc., international Adjusters, appraisers, and assessors headquartered in New York City. From Puerto Rico, the branch handled fire and allied lines, casualty, bonds, marine cargo, and hull losses throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The work demanded independence, consistency of standards across jurisdictions, and the ability to operate professionally in complex environments. During this period, lasting professional relationships were established throughout the region.
In 1948, Benjamin Acosta Sr. founded the firm that would be formally incorporated in 1949 as Benj Acosta Inc. The firm was not conceived as a commercial enterprise driven by scale, but as a professional practice grounded in accuracy, discipline, and ethical responsibility. Its reputation developed over time through documentation, reliability, and trust earned in the field.
As the firm matured, specialization followed necessity. In 1965, Benjamin Acosta Sr. founded Benaco Adjusters as a dedicated operation to handle aircraft-related claims and aviation losses. This marked the firm's first formal expansion into a highly technical line requiring specialized knowledge and precision.
In the early 1970s, Joaquin Acosta joined Benj Acosta Inc. His arrival marked the beginning of a new phase of growth and modernization. During this period, the firm obtained certification under the National Flood Insurance Program, allowing it to handle a broader range of flood-related and government-backed claims. This certification expanded the firm's scope and positioned it to respond to increasingly complex public-sector assignments.
By the 1980s, leadership responsibilities transitioned. Joaquin Acosta assumed the role of president, taking responsibility for operations, strategic direction, and technical oversight. Benjamin Acosta Sr. became chairman of the board, providing institutional guidance and continuity of standards while remaining actively involved in the firm's direction. Under Joaquin Acosta's presidency, the firm expanded its operational reach throughout the Caribbean and reinforced professional relationships in South America that had been established decades earlier.
During the 1990s, the firm continued to evolve in response to changing claim environments. Joaquin Acosta led the expansion of the automobile division through Benaco Acosta operations, addressing increased volume and complexity in vehicle-related claims. In the early 2000s, the firm secured a specialized government contract involving automobile liability and responsibility claims. This engagement resulted in the creation of a dedicated division focused on public-sector automobile claims handling.
In 2002, Ricardo Acosta, the second son of Joaquin Acosta, joined the firm with the intention of contributing to the continued expansion of the family enterprise. He pursued formal education in risk and insurance, earning an associate degree and completing the DRI program at St. John's University. Over the years, he assumed increasing operational responsibility. During the major catastrophe periods affecting Puerto Rico in 2017 and later during Hurricane Fiona, he served as vice president, overseeing operations under extraordinary claim volumes. His leadership included the expansion and coordination of subcontracted engineering firms and technical consultants to sustain accuracy and documentation standards during peak demand.
Joaquin Acosta Jr., the eldest son of Joaquin Acosta, joined the firm in 2005. He brought a legal and liability-focused perspective shaped by academic studies at the Marriott School of Business at Brigham Young University and a juris doctor degree from the University of Miami, magna cum laude. Admitted to the Florida and California bars, he became a licensed attorney in 2008 and practiced in medical malpractice defense between 2012 and 2014. He serves as vice president of Benj Acosta Inc., contributing to the firm's expansion in liability and high-exposure claims.
In 2011, Jorge Acosta, the third son of Joaquin Acosta, joined the firm and began working in inspection and field operations. During the catastrophe period of 2017, he played a key role in operational expansion and was appointed director of operations. Working alongside Gabriel Acosta, he helped manage Adjuster deployment, workflow coordination, and customer service operations during sustained high-volume periods.
Gabriel Acosta joined the firm in 2008 and developed into a central operational figure. A Certified All-Lines Adjuster licensed in multiple U.S. jurisdictions, with additional licenses pending, his training includes formal Adjuster instruction, state farm certification, and advanced Xactimate certification. He holds academic degrees in finance and business. In 2017, he was appointed director, assuming responsibility for operational traffic, staff expansion, and subcontractor coordination. He served as the primary liaison between Adjusters, contractors, and in-house operations, ensuring continuity and structure during the firm's most demanding periods.
Across decades, the firm's work has been repeatedly tested by catastrophe. From Santa Clara in 1956, through David and Federico in 1979, Hugo in 1989, Andrew in 1992, Marilyn in 1995, Georges in 1998, Irma and María in 2017, and Fiona in 2022, the Acosta firms remained continuously engaged. Benj Acosta Inc. managed major commercial accounts, NFIP claims, and government portfolios.
Each catastrophe brought destruction, but also confirmation of method. Through these events, the firm demonstrated the ability to balance technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, and disciplined documentation with an understanding of the human impact of loss. Over time, this consistency established a reputation not only for professional competence, but for stewardship in recovery.
For more than eight decades, the Acosta firms have operated under the same guiding principles: loyalty to the insurance company, its general agent, the producing agent, the authorities regulating the industry, the public served, and an uncompromising loyalty to professional conscience. Reputation was not claimed. It was earned, recorded, and sustained.
